HABIT OF MIND

Engagement is fostered when writers find meanings new to them or build on existing meanings as a result of new connections and act upon the new knowledge that they have discovered.

LEARNING OUTCOME

Identify how your views of writing have changed as a result of the work you have done in the course.

CLASS PLANS

Let's Get Started!

Log onto your Islander Email and open your OneDrive ENGL 1302 folder. (Get used to this, it should be the first thing you do for every class session) Also open up our Wix site and go to today's class plan.

10 Minute Writing Warm Up

You have ten minutes to complete the following prompt in a Word Document. Save the Warm Up in your OneDrive folder and title it "September15WarmUp". Prompt:

How did the reading of metaconcept change / transform / expand your knowledge about writing, the ways you think about using writing? Offer one or more "before" and "after" examples.

Explain in your own words Threshold Concept 1.0 and how it applies to writing.

Warm Up Discussion

Get into groups! Share and discuss how the reading went for your group, as well as share what you wrote in your Warm Up. Some additional questions to help you with discussion are: What did you like and dislike about the reading? Was there anything that you found very interesting? Anything that left you confused? Take notes as you discuss so you know what to talk about when we then discuss as an entire class.

Group Discussion

Introduction of the Discovery Log

Begin individual work of starting the research process. You are more than welcome to use the Research Chart as a guide to help you learn more about your focus as you work towards understanding the term "Freedom", determine what it means to you, and discovering what problem you are adding into the conversation.

You can find instructions for the Discovery Log on Blackboard, or here.

Have fun with it, and begin researching!

HOMEWORK

1. Continue working on your "Getting To Know Me" Project. Work a post into your site sharing with your readers who you are as a writer. Hint: your "Week 2 Reflection" will help you start the process of writing this post.

2. Do just a little bit of research. 30 minutes to an hour this weekend will be more than enough.

3. Read Thresholds 4.0 and 4.2 in Naming What We Know and complete Reading Response One. You can find a scanned copy of the reading on BB, or here. The writing prompts can be found below. This is a reflection, so it requires more that a simple listing of your thoughts. Remember to also work textual evidence into each response! Complete your reflection in a word document, titled "NWWKReadingResponse1" in your OneDrive folder.

  • Reflect on an instance in school where you were faced with, and had to deal with, failure. How did you overcome this challenge?

  • What part or parts of the reading were not clear, and why? How / why did they confuse you?

  • What would you believe about writing if the concept were not true or accurate? What kind of writing would you do?

4. Complete the Week 2 Reflection. Each week we will end with a reflection that focuses on looking at what we have done so far and what progress we have made as writers and learners. Answer the following questions in a Word Document and save it in your OneDrive folder. Title the document: "WeekTwoReflection".

  • You have survived your first two weeks. How did they go? Describe your first two weeks of the semester to me. What were your struggles, and where did you excel? What are excited about, and what are you the most worried about?

  • How would you describe yourself as a writer? Explain your typical writing process and your struggles and strengths as a writer.

  • What do you hope to achieve in this course this semester? Besides the obvious answer of passing. How do you plan on achieving those goals?
