When it's Monday and you partied extra hard on the weekend...

Habit of Mind Curiosity

Curiosity is fostered when writers are encouraged to seek relevant authoritative information and recognize the meaning and value of that information, and conduct research using methods for investigating questions appropriate to the discipline.

Learning Outcome Six

Explain what you have learned from being a novice in new writing situations, and describe how these experiences, which might include failure, contribute to your willingness to accept new challenges as a writer.

The To Do List

10 Minute Writing Warm Up

Complete the following prompt in a Word Document. Save the Warm Up in your OneDrive folder and title "September18WarmUp". Prompt:

Threshold Concept 4.0 states that: "many people assume that all writing abilities can be learned once once and for always. However, although writing is learned, all writers always have more to learn about writing" (Rose 59).

What do you think about this concept? Do you agree or disagree? Why or why not?

Before you started this semester and walked into this classroom, what did you feel that you still needed to learn as a writer? Since then -- what has changed? Do you still feel the same way about what you need to learn, or are there new things that you feel you need to learn as a writer?

Group Discussion

Get into groups and discuss the reading and your reflections. Remember to share any parts that were confusing or difficult to understand. That way your peers can possibly help you work through the struggle.

Class Discussion

Questions? Comments? Concerns? What did you talk about in your groups?

In-Class Research

Today we are going to continue working on our research, while keeping this idea in our mind that as writers we are always wanting to educate ourselves on the unknown. Thus when we decide what we are going to research this semester, we DON'T want to pursue something that we are already fully educated on. Remember that what I am not asking for is a regurgitation of information that you find. You're looking for a conversation that you know little to nothing about and pursuing that. Remember too that your topic is NOT set in stone. Take one path and if you don't like where it takes you, then go in a different direction. It's all about trial and error.

When you realize that the direction you're going just isn't going to work...

Homework

1. Continue working on your "Getting To Know Me" Project. Your week three "mandatory post" is to share with your readers who you are as a writer. Hint: your "Week 2 Reflection" will help you start the process of writing this post.

2. Stay ahead in your research and don't forget to continually update your Discovery Log.

3. Read Threshold Concepts 3.0 and 3.1 in Naming What We Know and complete Reading Response Two. The writing prompts can be found below. This is a reflection, so it requires more that a simple listing of your thoughts. Remember to work textual evidence into each response! Complete your reflection in a word document, titled "NWWKReadingResponse2" in your OneDrive folder.

How would you define yourself as a researcher? Explain your research process.

How has what you read in Threshold 1.0, as well as Thresholds 3.0 and 3.1, impacted your understanding of research?

What role do other people have in shaping your identity?

Considering the reading of Threshold Concepts 3.0, 3.1, 4.0, and 4.2, how can the impact of others on your identity affect your identity as a writer?
