Awe yeah -- it's Wednesday! And the weekend is ALMOST here!
Habit of Mind Metacognition
Metacognition is fostered when writers are encouraged to examine processes they use to think and write in a variety of disciplines and contexts, and reflect on the texts that they have produced in a variety of contexts.
Learning Outcome One
Identify how your views of writing have changed as a result of the work you have done in the course.
The To-Do List:
1. Log onto your Islander Email and open your OneDrive ENGL 1302 folder. (Get used to this, it should be the first thing you do for every class session) Also open up our Wix site and go to today's class plan.
2. 10 Minute Writing Warm Up -- you have ten minutes to complete the following prompt in a Word Document. Save the Warm Up in your OneDrive folder and title "September20WarmUp". Prompt:
Define "identity" and explain what it means to you.
Explain IN YOUR OWN WORDS what ideology means and provide examples.
What is the connection between identity, ideology, and writing?
3. Get into groups! Share and discuss how the reading went for your group, as well as share what you wrote in your Warm Up. Take notes as you discuss so you know what to talk about when we then discuss as an entire class. When you are done discussing in your groups, come up to the board and write your group's summary of 3.0 and 3.1.
4. Naming What We Know Threshold Concepts 3.0 and 3.1 Reading Discussion
Let's ask ourselves the question: "how do your identities and ideologies affect your writing?" *This is NOT a trick question. It's okay if you can't answer this fully, or confidently! That's part of the process.
5. Work on your "Getting To Know You Project" -- ie your blog/site. Wrap up and finish the "Introduction" post if you haven't already, and then work on completing your "Who Are You As A Writer?" post.
When the teacher tells you to talk about yourself...
Homework
1. Read Threshold Concept 2.0 in Naming What We Know and complete Reading Response Three. The writing prompts can be found below. This is a reflection, so it requires more that a simple listing of your thoughts. Remember to work textual evidence into each response! Complete your reflection in a word document, titled "NWWKReadingResponse3" in your OneDrive folder.
Using your past experiences with writing (in or out of school) choose examples that you think help you "apply" or illustrate the concept. For example, how was your use of writing in the past an example of not understanding or believing the concept? How would your use of writing in the past have changed or been different if you had understood this concept?
How does this concept change / transform / expand your knowledge about writing, the ways you think about using writing? Offer one or more "before" and "after" examples.
2. Don't forget to stay on-top of your Discovery Log. This is something you need to continually work on and research outside of the classroom.
3. Work on your "Who Are You As A Writer?" post for your Getting to Know Me Project. You can look at my blog here for inspiration, or if you want to know more about me.
